Oct 29, 2015 | cards, Stampin' Up!

I don’t send a lot of Hallowe’en cards, so I don’t always choose to buy a specific Stampin’ Up! Hallowe’en set (*gasp* yes, it’s true, I do not own every single stamp from the Stampin’ Up1 catalogue…). There are definitely ways around that, though! My son is older now, so there’s not a lot of call for class treats or scrapbook pages, but it’s still fun to mark the day and have something on hand just in case the occasion arises. My Paper Pumpkin subscription often fills in the gaps for me – there’s usually something fall or Hallowe’en themed around this time of year that I can use for special trick or treaters or for a quick project. For this card, I used a sentiment from the Holiday Catalogue host only set, Six Sayings. I love this particular set (and was thrilled to win it when I was at Stampin’ Up!’s North American convention earlier this year). It has a stamp for Hallowe’en, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and Valentine’s Day, though they could be used in other situations in some cases. The paper along the edge of the card is from the Happy Haunting Designer Series Paper, which has some definitely spooky themed designs, but also has designs that can be used in other situations (the scenic card from the other day for example). I used a portion of one of the Spider Web Doilies to finish the front of the card. I used the remainder of the doily inside the card as well. These doilies are two sided, with a black side and a white side, so I definitely think you can get away with using them on non-Hallowe’en projects. We made this card in Stamper’s Club this month, so everyone has at least one card for a special trick or treater! If you’re in the Burlington area and you’d like to join us at club, new members may start their 6 month membership at any club class – the next one is November 16th at 1pm or 7pm. Please contact me for details! If you’re not local to Burlington, contact me about online club options!

Last year, I found that I used Stampin’ Up!’s Hallowe’en themed Designer Series Paper for a lot of non-Hallowe’en projects – and this year looks to be similar! (and yes, using an apostrophe in that word is something I can’t shake. It just feels like a horrible error if I leave it out). The Happy Haunting paper from the Holiday Catalogue definitely has some specific Hallowe’en images – I’ll share some with you during this week, but thought I’d kick off this week by a non-Hallowe’en card with this paper. This past weekend, I did an in home card making party with Sue and her friends. She won the Silent Auction package that I donated to Tansley United Church a while back, so had a free class for 6 people plus a voucher for merchandise. We made this quick and easy holiday card using the Sleigh Ride Edgelits and the star paper from the Happy Haunting Designer Series Package. I love the effect of the starry sky behind the village! The stars are not so large that they overwhelm the silhouettes either – I tried a version with the Lucky Stars Embossing Folder and found the stars seemed too big for the cut outs for my taste. The other neat thing about this Designer Series Paper is that it has a vanilla base rather than a white base. Add in a sentiment from the coordinating Jingle All the Way set (get the edgelits and stamps at a discount in the bundle) in Basic Gray ink and you’re done!
If you’re looking to get some Christmas cards done, there’s plenty of opportunity to make your own. November’s Monthly Card Class (Weds 4 Nov) will have one holiday card and one masculine card in the mix (you make 4 different cards during class); November’s Christmas Card Class (Thurs 19 Nov) will feature 4 holiday cards made using the Winter Wonderland Vellum Stack and Iced Rhinestones embellishments – your class fee includes full packages of each and you will use some during class and take the remainders home with you; finally, the Christmas Stamp a Stack (Sat 28 Nov 10 am or 1 pm) to create 10 cards (5 different patterns) to really get a whole bunch of cards done in time for the holiday mailing deadlines. See the YamStamps Events Page for more details and to register. Please note the registration deadlines – especially for the Christmas Card Class. Please contact me if you have any questions or need assistance registering. Don’t forget – if you’re really interested in one of these classes but can’t make that date, get a group of friends together and I will bring the class to you!

Stampin’ Up!’s Hearth and Home Thinlits Dies make a fun combination with the Happy Scenes set (discounted in a bundle!) – and you can match the scene to the season! This scene was coloured with Stampin’ Write markers and a wash with the aquapainters in the sky & ground, but I was a little too delicate with my background colouring so it’s a bit washed out here, but the leaves (and wind!) match the scene outside my window today. (oh, and Room With a View is one of my favourite films ever, so I love that I can use that in a blog post title!)
A heads up that if you have a lot of stamp sets on your wish list, you will want to have your list ready for MONDAY….because we just found out that Stampin’ Up! is going to be having a limited time discount on stamps! More details here on Monday as soon as I get the details. Great news for Stampers Club members as we get together on Monday so extra bang for the buck! In the meantime, check your wish list and GO JAYS GO!!!
Oct 11, 2015 | cards, Seasonal Catalogue, Stampin' Up!

Here in Canada it’s Thanksgiving, so I’m sharing this appropriate autumn card with you! It uses the Stampin’ Up! bundle Among the Branches, which includes the Among the Branches stamp set and the Woodland Embossing Folder. You may have noticed this card on the table during my appearance on Morning Live – I made it really quickly the evening before! After embossing the cardstock, I used a sponge dauber to run Early Espresso ink over the tree trunks, and stamped on just a few leaves. Stamping negative impression sentiments onto coloured cardstock can add an extra layer of colour to your projects, rather than just stamping on Very Vanilla or Whisper White – not that there’s anything wrong with that, but sometimes it’s nice to do something a little different. A little gold thread and it’s done!
I hope that you are able to spend some time with friends and family over the long weekend. I plan on enjoying dinner with family and taking some time to reflect on my many blessings. Happy Thanksgiving!
